Free Software!

Here you'll find clickable links to free software which you can download and use at no charge. You can't beat free. You're welcome. Just click on the logo. I have reduced the number of programs to the ones I think are best.

Open Office is a free alternative to Microsoft Office - this is an excellent integrated suite of Microsoft Office compatible products and includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics and more.

A free anti-virus and anti-spyware program from Microsoft.

AVG is fast, effective and integrates with your email program. Versions are available for all versions of Windows. Be sure to configure it to update itself every day. Remember - only one anti-virus program at a time.

Ad-Aware is one of several spyware removing programs here. Each will catch stuff the other may miss. To download it click on the logo on the left then click the green "Download Ad-Aware Free" button on the right side of the window.

Spybot Search & Destroy is one of several spyware removing programs here. Each will catch stuff the other may miss. Look for the free version.

They produce highly rated software. Two that I like are their anti-malware product and their rogue software remover. They can find problems that other programs can miss.

CCleaner started life as "Crap Cleaner" and as it became mainstream rather than just for nerds, it cleaned up its name and became CCleaner. With your permission, it removes unused and orphaned files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

Need to create a PDF (portable document format) file? PDFRedirect is the one I use. Your computer thinks this software is a printer so you can create a PDF file from any printing program. Slick.

ScreenHunter is a utility that lets you capture (save as a picture) of some or all of what is on your monitor. I used it to capture some of the logos on this page.

If you have confidential data on your computer such as passwords, bank statements or any other information you do not want to fall into criminals' (or computer repair technician's) hands, you need to protect that information by encrypting it. You need to invest some time to learn to use it but this is an excellent product. Your data will be safe from prying eyes.

Google Earth has actual satellite photographs of most of the world, including your house and the car parked in the driveway! Very cool and lots of fun. A recent addition is called Street View. Not in every city yet but you can zoom in to the street view to see lots of interesting stuff including people with blurred faces. Our house shows an unrecognizable me in the garage assembling some shelves.

PeerBlock lets you control who your computer "talks to" on the Internet.  By selecting appropriate lists of "known bad" computers, you can block communication with advertising or spyware oriented servers, computers monitoring your p2p activities, computers which have been "hacked", even entire countries!  They can't get in to your computer, and your computer won't try to send them anything either. Highly recommended if you download torrents.

Vuze used to be called Azereus but neither name means much to me. Regardless, this is a great program for downloading music, movies, ebooks and so on from torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay.

FileZilla is an excellent FTP transfer program. If you don't know what that means, you don't need it. I use Filezilla to transfer this website from my laptop to my domain server.

VLC Media Player from VideoLAN. This will play everything!

Serif makes pretty good website authoring software for beginner to intermediate users. I used it to build this site. They have a free version too.

If you catch the genealogy bug like I did, you need good software to keep track of everything. Personal Ancestry File is the software I started with to keep track of all my dead relatives.
